The bus ride home

I like watching people. Okay wait that came off wrong. I like watching people when they don't know that I'm watching them. Okay, somehow I made it worse. There's something about watching and observing social situations that is so much more different than partaking in one. You start noticing not just what people are saying more clearly, but also their body language and their face expressions with the caveat that you aren't involved in the situation, you're just an observer. I've always not been great at social interaction, be it among peers or those older or younger to me. It isn't something that comes naturally to me, but watching others do their thing and understanding why they do it? There is something so...satisfying about it. Humans are at their rawest most unfiltered selves(for good or bad) when they don't know that there's something or someone judging them on how they perform. This gives you some situations that enlighten you much more than wh...

Addiction and Dependence

Addiction is a word that has really come into popular use in recent years. Largely in part due to the growing epidemics of alcohol consumption and drug abuse. Addiction is a state of being so enamoured with a certain substance or sensation that you can't stop yourself from seeking it and steadily lose your self control at least when it comes to aforementioned substance or sensation. Addiction isn't just some vague emotional response. Contrarily it's a phenomenon rooted in science.  Let's take the example of Cocaine one of the most well known hard drugs in modern times. Consumption of cocaine usually affects you neurologically to produce a sense of euphoria. If you take a scientific view to what the nature of happiness is, you'd realise that it's the result of a complex cocktail of hormones released due to the presence of stimuli, which in this case is the cocaine. Excessive consumption of cocaine can cause hallucinations i.e you see things that aren't really...

The commodification of mental illness

Image
Mental illness has been around ever since people could think which is a really long time to say the least. Picture a caveman who doesn't want to hunting for mammoths with his mates one day and just lies in his corner of the cave. Hilarious, I know. Unlike conventional illnesses, and disorders, mental illnesses and disorders don't usually have visible signs or symptoms of disease unless you consider changes in behavioural patterns. For this very reason it's extremely easy to presume that a person suffering from a mental disease is being idle or unproductive of their volition.  This is indeed one of the greatest struggles of those who suffer from mental illness, to get their struggle recognised and to obtain the help they desperately indeed. Instead of receiving help they're treated with scorn and derision. Fortunately as of recently, much light has been shed on mental health and the need to take care of it just as you would take care of your body. Steadily, mental health...

Moral Conundrums: Logic or Emotion

Image
The Oxford dictionary defines the word conundrum as "a confusing problem or question that is very difficult to solve". Combining the word moral with it makes it a question or problem of ethics, that is, whether the solution is good or bad, justified or unjustified.  Moral conundrums are simple, interesting gateways into the world of the study of ethics and psychology, however they're often criticised for oversimplifying complex problems, especially when it comes to ethics.  It's wise therefore to understand that there will always be a divide between controlled environments and a realistic environment and adjust one's expectations of the result according to that. You might have heard of the trolley problem, few haven't heard of it or at least a variation of it.  The most basic version goes as such: There is a runaway trolley barreling down the  r ailway tracks. Ahead, on the tracks, there are five people tied up and unable to move. The trolley is headed straigh...

A New Year Beckons

How are y'all doing? Merry Christmas! (belated of course). Another year's passed and I'm surprised that I don't really remember much at all of these two years at all. Perhaps the days have become too monotonous or I'm having early onset dementia, I'm kind of crossing my fingers for Option A. New years resolutions are pretty popular with the caveat that everyone is usually done with them in a week, so this post is something to that effect for me. I'll probably regret typing this one out at some point, but I feel like this is something that has been a long time coming. I have low self esteem. It isn't much when  you put it like that and indeed I wish it were just that, a sentence that didn't have much merit in my life, and yet it does. I've moved houses multiple times and along with them, schools. My current school is the fifth one I'm studying in and what this has resulted in, is that I've never had any close friends to call my own.  I...

Another Poem

The previous poem worked out far better than I could have expected and I'm grateful for all the praise and criticism I got for it. I figured that I'd give another shot at writing a poem. For a moment Far,far away a boy lies on meadow With fragrances many Of fresh citrus and grass He breathes in the fresh air Cool and sweet For a moment forgetting The Struggle Of Life Far far away, a mother works tirelessly Aching all over Held up by crutch of love Ailed treating the healthy Her love knows no bounds For a moment forgetting The Solace Of Life Far far away, a brother Looks Homeward Pining for sights familiar Caring not for the spectacular Nor the life in city For a moment forgetting The Charm of Life Far far away a father longs For child taken away With no hope of return He sheds many tears Unseen by others For a moment forgetting The Joy of life Far far away an infant full of innocence Smiles and laughs at all Looking in wonder All about herself Curiosity abounding within Her lit...

A song from the bard!

H'lo folks, board exams are going on right now and they're a pain to deal with, so unfortunately I'm not going to write normal blogposts till they're over. You can expect a christmas and new year post however! Until then, here's a poem composed by myself with no rhyme(literally) or reason. The Palm by the Roadside It was a chance occurrence by all means  That a sapling was born  By the roadside Among dust and trash A sight for sore eyes One, so tiny and green With a life ahead full of glee Thirst quenched by rain  Life sustained by light of Sun Steadily it grew Tall,Mighty and Strong People passed by Wondering Indeed How could something so great Sprout from thin air! The palm saw much Of Hope and of Dismay Of Love and of Strife  And of solace and discord Yet it stood by the roadside Watching cars go by at great speeds and it's heart longed, to travel As they did with haste One day, a storm came Of terrifying power it was People cried in fear Taking shelter und...
